“In Beginnings, Yamuna Matheswaran looks back at her life and that of her family through the lens of nostalgia, gender, and cultural history, in an attempt to better understand her own experiences growing up. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and raised in several cities across India, the artist explores her inherited Tamil identity, seeking to reestablish a connection with it while rejecting existing gender norms. By working on these paintings and simultaneously reflecting on the social milieu into which the older generation was born and raised, the artist attempts to empathize with them, memorialize the joyous times while making peace with certain difficult events of the past, and ultimately move forward with a renewed sense of agency.”
