I'm a writer, journalist and visual artist.

My articles have been published on Atlas Obscura, The Hindu, Fodor’s Travel, Unbias the News, and elsewhere. My piece about the Burmese Indian community in Chennai was featured on JSTOR Daily’s weekly roundup of the five best research-backed stories from around the web. In 2021, I was selected as a fellow to attend the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) conference held virtually.

Testimonials

“As an editor with Unbias the News, I and my team had to sort through hundreds of pitches in 2021. A pitch that clearly stood out was one about the exploitation of Indian workers in Serbia. Yamuna was the journalist to have pitched it to us.

It was a tough story. The protagonists - the workers who had already suffered so much - had to be interviewed with utmost sensitivity. Since the story raised serious allegations against companies, everything stated had to be backed properly. Yamuna neatly structured the story, laying out with clarity the timeline, the characters, and the incidents. Going one step further, she added a rich layer to her narrative by adding background, and put things in perspective for our global readership. The article was republished by another international publication, and translated into Greek and Spanish. Yamuna has reported on diverse topics and places, and that gives her a multiplicity of perspectives and versatility.”

Ankita Anand, Editor, Unbias the News

“Yamuna’s solo exhibition at Manara Arts and Culture, which I curated, focused on themes of home and belonging and was extremely well-received. Yamuna was as professional as she is skilled, delivering high-quality artworks on time, and it has been a pleasure to work with her. I believe the solo exhibition was just the beginning for her and that she will continue to amaze us as an artist.”

Hind Joucka, Founder, artmejo

“Yamuna demonstrated the ability to succinctly summarize complex information from various sources while retaining strong attention to detail. Her skills as a writer, editor and researcher were evident from her first day on the job, and she proved very adept at adapting her writing style to suit the needs of a particular audience. Her passion for the mission of the organization bought a great energy to our team. Yamuna is reliable, dedicated and an all-around pleasure to work with.”
